Paper published in Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Advanced Vehicle Control (AVEC) 2006, Taipei, Taiwan, 303–308. Authored by Newton, A. P. & Best, M. C. (2006).
This paper aims to assess the potential of a full vehicle simulator for use in vehicle handling dynamics analysis. Ideally, a sensitive and trained test driver can feel the differences in vehicle parameter set-up using a simulator and variation experiments will ultimately help aid the design process of a new vehicle, or vehicle control system. The potential of the simulator is measured using the motion system and focuses on the feedback this provides. It is shown that the motion is important for handling analysis and its characteristic response should be tailored to suit a specific restricted handling manoeuvre by utilizing specific degrees of freedom.
