The autonomous car is no longer a futuristic dream. SAE-L3 and L4 autonomous vehicles are already on public roads. There is a growing consensus that L3 L4 automation will not always be active and is not for every situation. As a consequence, interactions between driver and vehicle will require frequent transitions of control authority. This article outlines a study which uses a Cruden driving simulator to explore the effects of the Haptic Shared Control (HSC) approach, as an alternative to Traded Control (TC) for these transitions.
